George M. Pugh’s photo from his high school yearbook. Born in Lima in 1923, Pugh enlisted in the Army in March 1943 and served in the 10th Mountain Division during World War II. In May 1943, he wrote to his parents in Lima about his unit’s participation in the campaign to push the German army out of Italy. “It certainly was the biggest show I’ve ever seen," he wrote. "Most of the time I was ‘dog tired’ since we would go for long periods with no sleep. I would sleep any place, anytime, whenever I got the chance, which was very seldom.”
