Judge Benjamin F. Metcalf’s daughter, Mary “Coot” Metcalf, wed Gen. Americus V. Rice in 1866 on the grounds of the family home near the northeast corner of Market and Metcalf streets. Rice had distinguished himself and suffered terrible wounds – a head injury, loss of a leg and shattered left foot - during the Civil War. Following the war, he operated the mercantile business started by his father, C.H. Rice & Company, in Ottawa. He also served two terms in the U.S. Congress and returned to Washington in 1899 to work for the U.S. Census Bureau. He died there in 1904. Mary survived him by nearly two decades, dying in 1923.
