A drawing shows the home Judge Benjamin F. Metcalf built after coming to Lima in the early 1850s. “The residence and grounds of the late Judge Metcalf, the most desirable property and site for a fine residence, with nice grounds, forest and ornamental trees, walks, etc., in or about Lima,” read an 1874 notice of sale in the Lima Times-Democrat. The grounds were eventually purchased by Calvin S. Brice, who was a U.S. Senator from 1891 to 1897 and was known as a railroad and oil magnate.
